Caramelizing Onions
- Slice the onions thinly and melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions to the skillet, stirring occasionally, and cook for 30-40 minutes until deeply golden brown and caramelized.
- Remove the onions from heat and let them cool completely.
Preparing the Dip Base
- In a medium bowl, combine sour cream, softened cream cheese, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
Combining and Chilling
- Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld, or preferably overnight.
Notes
For an extra boost of flavor, deglaze the skillet with a splash of dry white wine or beef broth after caramelizing the onions and add the liquid to the dip. Serve with potato chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
