Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Cook the macaroni according to package directions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat; whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat, stir in 3 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper until the cheese is melted and combined.
- Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until it is evenly coated.
- Transfer the macaroni mixture to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese on top.
Baking
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the mac and cheese is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
- Let it stand for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set.
Notes
For an extra crispy topping, mix panko breadcrumbs with a tablespoon of melted butter and sprinkle over the cheese before baking. Ensure your cheese is at room temperature for a smoother melt into the sauce. Do not overcook the macaroni initially, as it will continue to cook in the oven.
