Instructions
- Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl; let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy to activate the yeast.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt, then add the yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
- Punch down the risen dough, divide it into 5 equal pieces, and roll each piece into a breadstick shape approximately 8-10 inches long.
- Arrange the shaped breadsticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover lightly, and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
- While the breadsticks are still warm, brush them with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of dried herbs like oregano or parsley to the dough or the butter topping before serving.
