Ingredients

Dough
  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 2 tsp Active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
Topping
  • 2 tbsp Melted butter
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese (optional)

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Whisk
  • Pastry brush

Method

Instructions
  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl; let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy to activate the yeast.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt, then add the yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the risen dough, divide it into 5 equal pieces, and roll each piece into a breadstick shape approximately 8-10 inches long.
  6. Arrange the shaped breadsticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover lightly, and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  8. While the breadsticks are still warm, brush them with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of dried herbs like oregano or parsley to the dough or the butter topping before serving.
