Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 0.05 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 0.75 cup milk

Equipment

  • large bowl
  • pastry blender or fork
  • baking sheet
  • biscuit cutter (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Mixing
  1. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add the milk, mixing until just combined and a soft dough forms.
Baking
  1. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it to about 1-inch thickness; avoid overworking the dough.
  2. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter or knife, then place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 5-8 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top and cooked through.

Notes

For extra flaky biscuits, make sure your butter is very cold. Do not overmix the dough, as this can lead to tough biscuits. Serve warm with butter, jam, or gravy.
