Making the Dough
- In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt, then in a separate bowl, whisk warm milk, melted butter, and egg.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mix until a shaggy dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
Assembling the Rolls
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a 12x8 inch rectangle.
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon, then spread softened butter over the dough and sprinkle with the sugar mixture.
- Roll the dough tightly from the long edge, then cut into 4 equal pieces.
Baking and Icing
- Place the rolls in a greased 8x8 inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), then bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- While rolls cool, whisk together powdered sugar, softened cream cheese, and milk until smooth.
- Spread the icing over the warm cinnamon rolls and serve immediately.
Notes
For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the filling. If you don't have a warm place for rising, preheat your oven to its lowest setting for a few minutes, turn it off, and then place the covered dough inside.
