Planting and Growing
- Prepare your garden bed or large pots by mixing equal parts potting soil and compost to create a nutrient-rich base for your corn.
- Plant each corn seed about one inch deep and six inches apart in rows, ensuring proper spacing for growth.
- Water the newly planted seeds thoroughly and consistently, especially during dry periods, to promote germination and healthy root development.
- Once the corn plants are about one foot tall, apply a balanced organic fertilizer around the base of each plant to provide additional nutrients.
- Monitor for pests and diseases, addressing any issues promptly with organic solutions like neem oil or insecticidal soap to protect your crop.
- Allow the corn to grow for approximately 60-100 days until the tassels turn dark brown and the kernels are plump and milky when punctured.
- Harvest the corn by firmly twisting each ear downwards and off the stalk, then prepare your fresh corn salad with additional vegetables.
Notes
For optimal growth, ensure the corn receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily and protect it from strong winds. Rotating crops each year can also help maintain soil health and deter pests.
