Basic Stuffing Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat, then add diced celery and onion, cooking until softened (about 5-7 minutes).
- In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread with the cooked vegetables, broth, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper, tossing gently until the bread is evenly moistened.
- Divide the basic stuffing mixture into four equal portions in separate bowls.
Apple & Sausage Variation
- In a skillet, cook the bulk sausage until browned, breaking it into crumbles, then drain any excess fat.
- Mix the cooked sausage and diced apple into one portion of the basic stuffing.
Cranberry & Pecan Variation
- Fold the dried cranberries, chopped pecans, and orange zest into another portion of the basic stuffing.
Mushroom & Herb Variation
- Sauté the sliced mushrooms in a small amount of butter until tender, then stir in the fresh sage and thyme.
- Combine the sautéed mushrooms and herbs with a third portion of the basic stuffing.
Cornbread Stuffing Variation
- In a bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread with the minced jalapeño.
- Mix this cornbread mixture with the final portion of the basic stuffing.
Oyster Stuffing Variation
- Combine the chopped shucked oysters and oyster liquor with a portion of the basic stuffing.
- Ensure the oysters are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Baking Instructions
- Transfer each stuffing variation into its own prepared baking dish or use dividers in a larger dish.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the stuffing is golden brown and heated through.
Notes
Feel free to adjust the seasonings to your taste. For a crispier stuffing, you can bake it uncovered for the entire duration. If you prefer a moister stuffing, cover it with foil for the first 20 minutes of baking, then uncover for the remaining time. These variations are easily adaptable; feel free to experiment with other ingredients you enjoy!
