Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 large eggs
Other
  • 3 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • powdered sugar for dusting

Equipment

  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • large, deep skillet or Dutch oven
  • funnel
  • tongs

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Then, in a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs.
  2. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a smooth batter forms. Ensure there are no lumps.
Frying
  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
  2. Pour about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of batter into a funnel, holding your finger over the opening. Release your finger and move the funnel in a circular motion over the hot oil, creating a lattice pattern.
  3. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Carefully remove the funnel cake with tongs and place it on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Serving
  1. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve immediately. You can also add your favorite toppings like fruit, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce.

Notes

For best results, maintain a consistent oil temperature throughout frying. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure even cooking and browning. You can experiment with different toppings to customize your funnel cake.
