Instructions
  1. Combine cranberries, sugar, and water/orange juice in a medium saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until cranberries burst and sauce thickens.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in orange zest, if using.
  4. Allow to cool completely before serving, as the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

Notes

For a smoother sauce, you can mash the cranberries lightly with a spoon while simmering. Adjust sugar to taste based on desired sweetness. This sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
