Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Mixing Wet Ingredients
- In a separate medium bowl, combine the wet ingredients: buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix with an electric mixer on low speed until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
Baking
- Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For best results, make sure your buttermilk and eggs are at room temperature before mixing. This will help create a smoother batter and a more even bake.
