Cake
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Equipment

  • oven
  • 9-inch round cake pans
  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • medium bowl
  • electric mixer
  • toothpick
  • wire rack

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Mixing Wet Ingredients
  1. In a separate medium bowl, combine the wet ingredients: buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar.
  2. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix with an electric mixer on low speed until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
Baking
  1. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  2. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, make sure your buttermilk and eggs are at room temperature before mixing. This will help create a smoother batter and a more even bake.
